INFLUENCE OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AND REWARD SYSTEMS ON TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE"
Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to determine the influence of staff development programmes and reward systems on teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State. Three research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 4947 teachers from all the 267 public secondary schools in the six education zones of the State. The sample of this study was 257 teachers which is 10% drawn from the population of three education zones of public secondary schools in Anambra State. This was achieved through the application of cluster sampling technique. Three instruments were used to collect data for the study. The first instrument is titled “Staff Development Programmes Scale (SDPS)” the second instrument is titled “Reward Systems Scale (RSS)” while the three instrument is titled “Job Performance Scale (JPS)”. The instruments were validated by three experts all from Faculty of Education, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus. To establish the reliability estimate of instruments, a single administration of the instruments was adopted for pilot testing. The data were analyzed using Cronbach Alpha method to measure the internal consistency of the instruments and reliability co-efficient values of 0.86 for ISTQ, 0.82 for MQ, 0.78 for RQ, and 0.78 for TJB are considered highly reliable and suitable for the study. The data were collected by the researcher with the help of three research assistants who are teachers in the secondary schools. Data from the instruments were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26. The research questions were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and independent t-test for hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that staff development programmes and reward systems positively and significantly influence job performance of teachers in public secondary school in Anambra State. Consequent on the findings, the study recommended that government and proprietors should make fund available for secondary school principals for organizing and sponsoring of teachers’ participation in development programmes. It was also recommended that government should strive to restructure and improve the reward systems in the educational sector. This will enhance teachers’ performance as positive reinforcement after training for the transmission of acquired knowledge and skills should be made available.
