INFLUENCE OF PARENTING STYLES ON SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE.
Abstract
The study examined influence of parenting styles on social adjustment of secondary schools students in Anambra state. Three research questions were asked and four null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The study adopted descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised 26,923 senior secondary (SS11) students in public secondary schools in Anambra state. The sample consisted of 600 SS11 students. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw the sample. Two instruments were used for data collection viz: Parenting style scale by Divya and Manikandan (2013) and Social Adjustment scale by Weisman and Sallye (1974). The instruments were subjected to face and content validation. The reliability of the instruments were established using crobach Alpha method. The result revealed co-efficient values of 0.70 for authoritative, 0.74 for authoritarian and 0.69 or permissive parenting styles and 0.82 for social adjustment scale. The completed copies of the questionnaire were retrieved on the spot. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study showed that authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles influence social adjustment of students. The findings also indicated that permissive parenting style does not influence the social adjustment of students. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the school authorities should provide counselling service units with trained counsellors to conduct a counselling service for students with social adjustment problems and that awareness should be created to parents on the effect of parenting style of rearing a child on their social adjustment in life. Educational implications of the findings were highlighted. Subsequently, limitations of the study and suggestions for further studies were made.
