ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE AS A PREDICTOR OF LECTURERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN SOUTH EAST STATES, NIGERIA
Abstract
The study investigated Organizational Climate as a predictor of lecturers’ job performance in Colleges of Education in South East States, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. Correlational research design was employed for the study. The population of the study consisted of 2,184 lecturers in the eight Colleges of Education in South East States, Nigeria. The sample size for this study comprised 655 lecturers drawn using stratified random sampling technique. Researcher-developed questionnaires titled ‘‘Organizational Climate Questionnaire (OCQ)’’ and Lecturers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (LJPQ)’’ were used for data collection. The instruments were validated by three experts; who are lecturers in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu university, Igbariam campus. Cronbach alpha was used for test of internal consistency of the instruments and the reliability indices obtained for Sections I and II of OCQ were 0.79 and 0.76 respectively and overall coefficient was 0.78 and 0.77 for LJPQ The researchers together with six research assistants collected data for the study using direct administration method and 97% return rate was recorded. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation for the research questions, and multiple regression for the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed among others that autonomous organizational climate predicts lecturers job performance to moderate extent in Colleges of Education in South East States, Nigeria. It was also found out that controlled organizational climate is a significant predictor of lecturers job performance in colleges of education in South East States, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Management of Colleges of Education should develop handbook on organizational climate approaches to minimize excessive control of lecturers to stimulate their job performance.
