PRINCIPALS’ MANAGERIAL COMPETENCIES AS CORRELATES OF TEACHERS’ WORK ENGAGEMENT IN GOVERNMENT OWNED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE
Abstract
The study examined principals’ managerial competencies as correlates of teachers’ work engagement in government owned secondary schools in Anambra State. The study adopted correlational research design. The study was carried out in all the six education zones (Aguata, Nnewi, Otuocha, Awka, Ogidi and Onitsha) with 267 government owned secondary schools. The population of the study was 6382 teachers. The sample of the study was 300 teachers of 267 government owned secondary schools in Anambra State drawn from the population through multistage sampling procedure. Two self-structured questionnaires titled “Principals’ Managerial Competencies Questionnaire (PMCQ)”; and “Teachers’ Work Engagement Questionnaire (TWEQ)” were used for data collection. Draft copies of the instruments were face validated by three experts from the University while construct validity was measured using exploratory factor analysis. The reliability of the instruments were ascertained using Cronbach Alpha method. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to answer the research questions and in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study indicated that there is a very high positive and significant correlation between principals’ human resource management competencies and teachers’ work engagement in government owned secondary schools in Anambra State among others. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that the secondary school principals should through their human resource management competencies identify means on how to help teachers to establish positive work engagement by addressing all the concerns in the working condition.
